InsideVandy, Vanderbilt University’s online community, recently posted an article about Erica Schlemmer, the first and only White member of the Vanderbilt Delta Sigma Theta chapter. Schlemmer says that she dropped out of her Panhellenic sorority to join Delta Sigma Theta:
Schlemmer had to know the same amount of information to join the chapter and had to take the same tests as the other sisters, but more than everyone else, she had to know exactly why she wanted to do it.
“More people asked me — because of my color — why I wanted to do it.”
Schlemmer said her membership in Delta Sigma Theta was accepted by Vandy students, many whom even considered her decision fascinating.
Most opposition came from black students at surrounding schools.
“I had to prove myself,” Schlemmer said. “Girls would look at me and think, ‘You don’t look like me, so why are you here?’”

Word on the e-streets is that Barack Obama is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. If this is the case, this is news to us here in the BGLO Blog newsroom. The story comes from WBLS radio personality and comedian Steve Harvey, a famous member of Omega Psi Phi. According to our sources, on Monday, February 4th, The Steve Harvey Show claimed on his show that Barack Obama is indeed a Kappa. Others say no, he is not a member and confirmed it with Kappa Alpha Psi Headquarters. What do you say? Has anyone seen Senator Obama twirling his Kappa Kane? Is this a case of people trying to claim the great Senator as one of their own? Or is this just a bad round of the telephone game? Let us know!
Just because it’s Tuesday.
The Gamma Tau chapter (Tuskegee University) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. show off their Coleman love for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
And now for something different: The Omegas giving a Delta Tribute.
Enjoy your Tuesday, and remember to get out and vote!
Sorry folks, we had a few glitches to iron out here on the site, but everything should be back in order and ready to go. Things are ramping up here at BGLO Blog Headquarters, so sit tight and enjoy the ride ![]()
I just got back from seeing the flick, How She Move. Decent movie, all about stepping/step dancing, though I’m not sure if it was supposed to be about stepping like Black Greek Organizations, because most of the moves weren’t like that at all. Still, I saw a few BGLO’s represent in the film, namely, Phi Beta Sigma and a brief stint by the men of Kappa Alpha Psi. Check the flick out when you get a chance!

I just….really don’t know what to say here, folks. Below is a video of a MIAKA (Men Interested In AKA) Probate show that happened last month. It’s dark in the beginning, but the lighting gets better.
Are BGLO auxiliary groups getting out of hand? Should AKA invoke a cease and desist? Do they even have a case?
The ladies of Delta Sigma Theta celebrated their 95th anniversary over the weekend. Here’s a video of the Kappa Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Theta (UNC Chapel Hill) performing a Founders’ Day tribute to their beloved sorority. Good job ladies!
Just in time for what seems like Founders’ Day Season (the month of January is the month when five of the nine NPHC organizations celebrate their founding dates), Ebony magazine has a four-page spread in its February 2008 issue profiling the Divine Nine. The four-page spread (pp. 104 - 108), entitled “Stepping Up,” gives a brief overview of all nine organizations, emphasizing many of their community service efforts both abroad and domestic.
I found the article to be very informative for non-Greeks, but most Greeks would probably know most of the information presented. I was particularly impressed by each organization’s community service programs, particularly those occuring in Africa. Other than that, it was nice seeing photos of various organizations in action throughout the article. Good job Greeks, good job Ebony!
The February 2008 issue of Ebony magazine is on newsstands today.
