Next week at the 100th Centennial Celebration of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Washington DC, Mattel Inc. will unveil a new Barbie collector doll specially designed for the sorority. Director of Barbie collector marketing, Elizabeth Grampp had this to say about the new doll:
When you pair that milestone with an organization representing an amazing cross section of women who are empowered leaders in any field, it’s a real opportunity to introduce the hobby of collecting to a new group of collectors. It’s such a landmark event.
The doll will be dressed in pink and green, the official colors of the sorority, and will retail for $50.00 on BarbieCollector.com, the Barbie catalog, and other select outlets across the country.
The first African-American Barbie Doll was released by Mattel in 1968, named Christie. She later had a male companion, named Brad.
UPDATE: The AKA Barbie is now on Sale. Read the update here.

A sorority doll for the sorority was created by one of our own sorors, who happens to be in my Atlanta Grad Chapter, and a recent MBA Grad. Her doll was introduced in October of 2007, before Mattel. The doll’s name is Ivy Rose. The website for the doll you have shown is http://www.sisterhoodboutique.com/akadoll.asp.

Why is the doll wearing short red hair. All my Barbies dolls have long hair. It doesn’t have to be straight, but it could be long or shoulder length and natural. This doll looks like she works for an airline and the hat is ugly.

My LS told me that the Mattel Doll would be on sale on the website after its unveiled in July.

Dee…I believe the doll pictured is the one referred to from 1968. The doll looks like my sister did in 1968 short curly red hair and all [compliments of Miss Clairol!]. During that time, many of us wanted to work for an airline as a ’stewardess’ when we got out of high school. We thought that would be a ‘good job’! Oh, and by the way, that style of hat was very popular in the 60’s. My mom & older sisters wore them.

As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha for twenty five years I am excited about the release of the Barbie Doll. Kudos to our National President Soror Barbara Mckenzie for being the brain child of this project. My eight year old daughter will love to add this Barbie to her collection.

Barbie used to have apparently less number of friends, clothes, careers or vehicles in 60s. Assorted things and friends of Barbie was a big fascination for most girls.
